Support Spinone Rescue
Spinone Rescue is in need of support from the Spinone community. The last few years have been tough for all rescue groups across the United States. Prices for everything we, as consumers, use on a daily basis have gone sky high. We all need to eat, keep a roof over our heads, and buy fuel for our vehicles. We understand that completely. Feeding and housing our families is the highest priority. Add to this the drastic increase in veterinary costs for our beloved companions. It's a struggle for many.
We've seen an increase in rescues in the last few years as well. We will always have rescues since there are some things that we just can't predict and families experience changes in circumstances that make rehoming their dog a necessity. We understand that as well. But we are seeing more dogs coming through rescue due to poor placement by breeders. While we have many excellent breeders, we also have some that are more interested in pumping out puppies rather than ensuring they get a good home. Many owners rehoming their dogs were poorly prepared for a 90 pound dog that will drool like it's an Olympic event, dig like a professional landscaper, shed enough hair to knit a new dog every couple of months and want the owners' attention even when they're tired after a long day at the office. Many owners just don't have any idea how to handle these things and the dog develops bad behaviors, or worse yet, the dog is relegated to the back yard where more bad behaviors develop due to lack of human interaction. Placing these dogs is difficult at best.
We've also found that the dogs coming through rescue seem to have more medical issues than in years past. We never send a dog to a new home without being spayed/neutered, microchipped, updated on vaccines, Lyme and heartworm tested, and evaluated by a veterinarian. The cost of performing these procedures has gone up exponentially. In the first 6 months of this year, Spinone Rescue has spent nearly $15,000 on three dogs. Thankfully, this is an exceptionally unusual situation, but it happens. We don't have a crystal ball and we can never know what tomorrow will bring. If the remaining 5 months of this year is like the previous 6 months, we'll be in trouble. I never want to have to decline to help a Spinone in need because we just don't have the funds to do it.
We have always been fortunate to have a Parent Club that believes in our mission and allows us to participate in the National Specialty auction every year. The Spinone Club of America now shares the auction proceeds with Spinone Rescue. That helps us tremendously and we are grateful for their support. But in bad years like this, it just doesn't begin to cover what we have to spend.
